While these two wild wood ducks lounge on a log, clad in their gorgeous breeding plumage, their mates are setting on eggs soon to hatch in nests concealed in hollow tree trunks above the water.

Wood ducks are nervous, flighty birds by nature so it is difficult to capture candid photos of these wild ducks in their natural habitat. This photo is the result of many hours of patient waiting in one of their favorite hangouts.
